As The Great British Bake Off Musical gets ready to take over Theatre Severn next week, we caught up with one of the show’s stars, Kathryn, who plays the sharp-witted and ever-glamorous Dame Pam. We chatted all things soggy bottoms, showstoppers, and what it’s like bringing such a fabulous character to life on stage.

What drew you to The Great British Bake Off Musical?
This is a dream-come-true experience for a lady “of a certain age.” A proper character role full of wit, with cracking songs and possibly the odd dance routine. I’d have fought to the death to play the part of Dame Pam Lee.

Why this show, and why now?
I just knew it would be magic. As a huge fan of Adrian Mole: The Musical by the same writers, the script and score are everything I hoped for and more. It’s truly British!

Tell us about Pam - how would you describe her, and what makes her fun (or challenging!) to play?
Let’s please give her the respect she’s due and refer to her as Dame Pam. This woman has worked hard for her title and keeps on keeping on, despite people thinking it could be time for her to retire! Over her dead body!

What’s your favourite thing about stepping into the world of Bake Off?
The whole cast is just phenomenal. It’s a joy to be in the rehearsal room every week being entertained by such talented folk. I shall miss it hugely when it’s over (trying not to think of that just yet!)

Any standout moments from rehearsals so far?
So many, but for me, I’m constantly wowed listening to the harmonies. The songs never get old. There’s something for everyone - big show tunes, tear-jerkers, rap - and all with exquisite harmonies. Chris Lewis is a Musical Director like no other. He can even make me sound half reasonable (just about!).

Is this character inspired by anyone in particular… perhaps a certain famous judge with fabulous glasses?
I mean, it’s not difficult to work out who Dame Pam might be! She doesn’t just look a bit similar, Pam’s witty repartee makes her a potential twin for a certain baking judge with the same initials. Peas in a pod!

What’s been the biggest challenge with this show - on stage or off?
I’m absolutely rubbish at learning and holding a harmony myself. I’m a Musical Director’s nightmare. Sorry, Chris! Another huge challenge for me is not laughing out loud on stage at the chaos unfolding in the tent!

What can audiences expect from this production?
Everything you expect from the TV series. Enchanting characters with backstories that might just tug on your heartstrings. I think everyone will have a different favourite that they’ll want to win… but who lifts the Bake Off Trophy? I’m not saying!

Sum it up in three delicious words!
Moist (your eyes will be a few times during the show), fluffy (don’t expect this to be too serious on the whole), and rich(this show delivers flavour like a rich chocolate ganache).

Any behind-the-scenes mischief or moments that have had you in stitches?
Just wait for the scone. I’ll say no more.

You’re working with a fab team on this - what’s the vibe been like in rehearsals with the cast and crew?
The team are perfect and the Tuesday evening vibe is a joy. There’s nothing better at the end of a long, stressful day at work than belly laughing with your mates.

If Pam were a baked good, what would she be - and why?
Dame Pam would be an Opera Cake for sure. She has so many layers and she’s very rich (and possibly a bit sticky in Act 2)!

And finally… what’s your favourite baked treat in real life? The one you can’t say no to!
I struggle to say no to anything homemade and couldn’t possibly choose just one favourite - but if you insist on making me pick, my mum used to make a Milk Chocolate Cake that I’ve never been able to replicate myself. She was a baking god (and still whacks out a flippin’ good Victoria sponge).

The Great British Bake Off Musical opens next week at Theatre Severn, and you won’t want to miss it! Packed with heart, humour, and a whole lot of cake, this feel-good show brings the much-loved world of baking to life with dazzling songs, unforgettable characters, and a generous sprinkle of chaos in the tent. Whether you're a fan of the TV series or just love a great night at the theatre, this is the perfect treat. Grab your tickets now and join us for a deliciously entertaining evening!
